Ric Rac or Fishbone Cactus - Epiphyllum anguliger

Ric Rac or Fishbone Cactus - Epiphyllum anguliger

With its wonderful distinctive fishbone shape, the Epiphyllum anguliger, or Ric Rac cactus, is like a piece of natural zig-zag art. This unusual cactus originates from the rainforest of Mexico and has uniquely shaped long, flat stems resembling a fishbone, hence its name! The stems will begin by growing upright but as they grow longer will eventually trail down. This is an epiphytic plant meaning it grows aerial roots as in its natural environment the fishbone would anchor to a host plant. Long, overgrown stems can safely be cut to shorten. Your plant will grow back fuller since new stems will grow from where you made the cut.

Remember: Fishbone cacti originate from the moist and humid rainforest. Not from the dry desert, like most cacti. This means that your fishbone cactus likes a bit more water than the average cactus. Make sure it gets enough water, especially during spring and summer.

  • Plant Care

    • Light: Bright, indirect
    • Soil & Water: Well drained soil for cactus. Keep the soil moist and fertilize during the growing period. In winter let the top of the soil dry out before watering. It can handle a little neglect, but jungle cacti do not like it to be dry for too long
    • Humidity: Average to above average
    • Pet Friendly: Yes
